The Tertiary Period (66–2.6 million years ago) was the first part of the Cenozoic Era, when mammals, birds, and flowering plants rapidly evolved after the dinosaurs went extinct. The climate started warm and humid, then gradually cooled, leading to the formation of grasslands and, later, the first ice ages.
